and houses were freezing cold, you had to go to the toilet outside and all the information you ever needed wasn't just a fingertip away, you actually had to listen painstakingly to the radio for an age or go a library and study if you wanted to research something!

According to Tommy Smith, another hard man from a bygone era, Lawrence was the hardest man he met in football. Smith said that if the ball came over he and Yeates had to get out of the way because Lawrence would take them out as well as the opposition if they got in the way.
Lawrence's description was that you didn't get sent off in those days, so if anybody was going to score he just took them out.

Aye, but if you told the youth of today that, they wouldn't believe you!

I remember my first ever visit to Anfield in 1968 seeing the great Tommy Lawrence, Ian St John, Chris Lawler, and others. What I’ll never forget is the atmosphere which could be felt before you even entered the ground. The kop in those days were standing and the noise was incredible. Liverpool were playing Leeds in my first visit when Gary Sprake dropped a routine cross for a ‘tap in’ with the kop spontaneously bursting out in a song called ‘Careless Hands’ Geat days and fantastic memories. Lawrence was absolutely huge, but despite this very athletic. They don’t make them like that anymore!!!
