A stroll in the park

The Harriers went through to the next round of the LDV Vans Trophy with goals from JJ, Shilts and Deano in the windswept plains of Essex tonight.  Dagenhams lone reply came from Mark Janney twenty minutes from time.

We kicked off with an almost full strength side that also included Drewe Broughton who was making a kind of homecoming.  He spent some time at Dagenham on loan before joining the Harriers 2 years ago.

He seemed to have recovered sufficiently from the crack to the head that he received against Shrewsbury on Saturday.  The only one missing from that game was Scott Stamps who is suffering from a back injury.

The first half was dominated by the Harriers with Craig Hinton the first to have a pop at goal.  His sliced shot went harmlessly out of play.
Sam Shilton was the next to come close when he pounced on a mistake by a Dagenham defender but, with only the keeper to beat, he mis-hit his shot and again it went the same way as Craigs moments earlier.

Relief came with a third goal for 'JJ' Melligan when, on 21 minutes, he hammered the ball home from 12yds out after a superb display of passing by himself, Shilton and Flynn.

We should have gone into a 2-0 lead just minutes later but Shilton, having another good game, saw his crisp shot pushed out of play by the Daggers keeper.  From the ensuing corner Hintons header only just cleared the crossbar.

Broughton was the next to see his attempt on goal pushed away by Gothard in the home sides goal after he ran onto the perfect pass from Bo Henriksen.

The Harriers confirmed their superiority on 39 minutes when at last Shilts got the goal he deserved.  He ran onto a superb long ball from Adie Smith that split the Dagenham defence, in one deft move he put the ball over the head of the advancing keeper to send us into halftime with a convincing 2-0 lead.

HT. 0 - 2

With only three minutes gone of the second half we extended our lead to 3-0.  Dean Bennett, making his comeback from injury and on for Adie, was in the right place for Shiltons pin point cross.  From near the far post he struck a venomous shot only to see it blocked by Gothard.  He made no mistake with the rebound.

The Harriers relaxed slightly after the goal and Dagenham started to find a bit more space.  Shipp was the first to test the largely redundant Brock when he came close with a header after 62 minutes.  A minute later McDougald beat the off-side trap but his firm strike went into the side netting.

Ian Foster, who had replaced Bo at half time, should have extended our lead but he could only hang his head in despair when his shot from only 6yds out easily cleared the bar.

On 71 minutes the Daggers efforts were rewarded when they grabbed a consolation goal.  Janney raced onto a precision pass from Yohance Lewis and fired an unstoppable shot past Brock from 16yds out to make the score 3-1.

Drewe Broughton had another chance to open his account just after when he raced onto a fine through ball but just as he was about to pull the trigger Vickers put in a last gasp challenge.  This was enough to put Drewe off and for us to wait another day for his first goal.

Sean Parrish made his comeback from injury tonight too.  He replaced Danny Williams ten minutes from time and almost his first action was to see his shot just graze the bar.

Ian Foster was the next to see a good chance lost when he squared to Broughton rather than shoot for goal himself.  His pass was intercepted by Dagenhams on loan from Lincoln defender Paul Mayo.

With just 5 minutes left the Harriers had claims for a fourth goal turned down after Shilton poked the ball home from just a few yards out but the linesman had already raised his flag and it didn't stand.

So it wasn't the banana skin that we all expected but a comparatively easy stroll in the park that takes us onto a money spinning 2nd rd tie against ?
