It was with great anticipation in which the majority of Harriers fans made their way to Aggborough for the match with Rochdale, the Southend result made us all hope that those endless draws were finally at an end.
The news that those gallant 51 travelling Harriers brought back about Sean Flynn finally showing his best was met with scepticism from the majority of those who didn't go but we all wanted to see him recreate this promising form as well as catching a glimpse of the 'gems', namely Melligan and Clyde.
How different the outcome could have been. Poor old Drewe, I have a lot of sympathy with him and I can't accept why so called fans boo him at the end when he had the decency to come and applaud the crowd. Yes he could and should have scored but he always gives 100% for the team and yes if we drop him then who else are we going to replace him with?
We have no money so there's certainly not any new players going to come in, and Matt Lewis
I hear you cry, no come on, he's shown nothing to suggest he's ready for first team football and he certainly is no better than Mr Broughton.
I personally have a lot of respect for Drewe and I believe he is one of our most hardworking players. And yes, if Britton decides he's not up to the task, "Right" he says, "Lets sell him", who would buy him???
Nobody has got any money, he'd just end up leaving when his contract expires. We need to make the most of the players we've got.
The only possible answer I see is getting in Peter Beadle on loan from Bristol City, (Page 312 on Ceefax reliably informs me he's available for loan). He has a proven track record and the new rules allow us to take 3 players on loan at once.
Shilton again looked good and he provided good crosses with his left and right feet, however sadly for us there are few central defensive partnerships in the division better at dealing with crosses than the experienced Jobson and the towering Griffiths.
Clyde, Ayres, Hinton etc again also looked defensively solid, the fact that we restricted 2nd placed Rochdale to a meagre number of chances is credit to our defence and I believe it must be one of the best in the league. Add a certain Senegalese fellow to it and it is near watertight.
Another player who deserves extra credit is Brock
, he is an excellent 'keeper and he hasn't let us down now at all really since Luton over 8 months ago. We wouldn't realise how good he actually is until heaven forbid he left the club, he deserves a lot of praise.
So defensively again excellent, attack wise we could have won it, a little more luck and we would all be praising Britton for another good win against quality opposition again.
I look at games like this with the same attitude as when we drew 0-0 with Plymouth a year ago, didn't seem a particularly good result at the time, but their end of season placing just showed how good a point that was.
So on to the next game, Bristol Rovers away, they turned over our friends from Shropshire today 5-2 with Grazioli grabbing a hat trick. However, I have a strong belief that our defence will keep their attackers quiet (in particular Tait) and we will grab a goal at the other end.
Drewe has the temperament that will allow him not to be fazed by his afternoon and he will come back stronger than ever, if anyone deserves a goal it has to be him.
I seem to think we've heard this before but: COME ON YOU REDS!!!
