Harriers get Birched

The rumours around Aggborough since last season have been that we were about to sign the Walsall striker Gary Birch.  It never happened and tonight we wish it had.

He popped up with two second half goals to send the Harriers to their second friendly defeat in a week.

All eyes during the first half were on Walsall's new signing, Paul Merson, who they have recently signed from Portsmouth.  He gave the Harriers a footballing lesson and twice came close to scoring.

The best chance for us in the first half was from Matt Lewis who saw his 25yd shot go just wide of the upright.  Dean Bennett saw a similar effort go the same way just before half-time.

After the break it didn't take Walsall long to open the scoring.  Gary Birch placing his shot between Stuart Brock and the post.

The game then settled down with Walsall happy to defend and the Harriers trying hard to grab the goal back.  It never came, the closest being a Matt Lewis free kick that cleared the wall and the post.

Bo Henriksen, who had come on for Kyle Lightbourne at half-time, forced the Saddlers keeper into a quality save but then, with the clock running down, Walsall got the second goal that their play deserved.

That man Birch again collected the ball and gave Brockie no chance of saving it as the ball shot past him into the back of the net.

Ian Britton has hinted at getting a striker in this week.  Will it be Birch or will it be someone else to bolster our shot shy front line?
