Thankfully it's the last game in this rush of Christmas battles and it comes against a side that are doing extremely well this season after years of under achieving.

Southend went up to fourth place in the League after they hammered a dire Rushden & Diamonds at Roots Hall yesterday.  That result, although in our favour, still meant that the jump between 22nd and 23rd place has now increased to six points.  With Rushden entertaining Swansea this game with Southend is one that we must win.  A possible nine point gap could be one that's too big to bear.

We have no new injuries following the defeat at Brisbane Rd and, so it seems, neither have Southend.  They'll be without just two players.

Duncan Jupp is still struggling with a badly gashed leg while while Jay Smith remains a long-term absentee.  Former Harrier, Drewe Broughton, is now at Wycombe.

It'll be interesting to see if the boss continues with Blair Sturrock alone upfront or if he brings Gary Birch back alongside him.  Whatever he does it's a fact that we have to win this game and with that in mind we have to score a few more goals.  It's high time Birchy opened his account for us.
