Harriers make hard work of Hyde
Report by Steve Williams
Goals from both of the Harriers main strikers ensured a 2-1 victory against lowly Hyde today, as well as both men doubling their tallies for the season.
It was Anthony Malbon who opened the scoring with just over two minutes on the clock. The visitors charged forward from the off, but as the Carpetmen went back up the pitch they were the side to cause some trouble. Malbon capitalized on some none existent defending to bend a lovely shot around the Hyde 'keeper, David Carnell.
The Reds rested on their laurels and were punished around the quarter of the hour mark when Hyde equalised. Danny Jackman gave the ball away on the edge of the Hyde area and the visitors surged forward as the Reds midfielders and full backs sauntered back. Josh Gowling was turned and Tom Collins struck from outside the area to send his team level although Nathan Vaughan should've done better.
Both sides looked to go ahead in the game but couldn't produce anything of note. That was, however, until Michael Gash found his second goal of the season.
The Harriers were awarded a free kick just inside the Hyde half and Lee Fowler lofted a brilliant ball into the box. Gash leaped brilliantly to meet the ball and guide it past Carnell.
The Harriers kept pushing as the half continued and as they surged with seconds to go in the half Malbon fired at goal. Carnell looked to have parried it to safety but Jackman had other ideas and fired at Carnell again but this time the keeper did well to save a second time and keep the score at 2-1 going into half time.
The second half saw both sides pushing but with no real response. The Hyde manager, Scott McNiven, made three early changes in the half bringing on Scott Spencer, Louis Almond and new signing Emmanuel Dieseruwve. This failed to change the side though and the team was still showing no real creativity despite looking slightly threatening on the break against an unusually outnumbered Harriers defence.
The second half showed no real sign of a goal in the first twenty odd minutes with Gash having a half chance before being taken off, Amari Morgan Smith replacing him to make his second Harriers home debut after being on loan with us last season.
Kyle Storer had a good chance to extend the lead but fired his shot wide. Malbon did well down the left flank, which was a constant threat and, coming in the box, pulled it back for Storer. The captain couldn't convert though.
The best chance of the half fell to Hyde though. They once again threatened on the break and the ball came across to Collins and he fired straight at Nathan Vaughan who saved well in the end, anywhere else and it was in though.
The visitors kept pushing but, bar some decent blocks from both centre-halves, they failed to test Vaughan again.
It was an unconvincing victory but it still warrants three points and lifted the Reds to sixth. We're now level on points with the three teams above us, Alfreton, Forest Green and Edgar David's Barnet but still five points off early pace setters Cambridge and Nuneaton. Steve Burr will be aware that were Hyde one of those teams, the result could've been better but will be happy to take the points and will now look forward to trips to Tamworth (Tuesday) and Dartford.
A special mention goes to the North Stand's new recruit. He may look like Steve Burr's evil brother but he has coined the nickname of 'The Choirmaster' and kept the fans in high voice. Well done good Sir!
