World Cup 2022

Post by andrewb » Tue Nov 08, 2022 1:57 am

With the World Cup just a couple weeks away you might like to try forecasting the group stage results - there are 8 groups with 6 matches in each = 48 matches - here is what i posted some time ago -

special this WORLD CUP year - you can predict the results of ALL the group stage matches (48 of them!) - 2 points for exact correct score ; one point for correct team winning ( or draw) but not right score. PLUS predict the eventual winners ( 4 points, or 2 if they make the final but dont win)
That make 100 points available !!

There is a first post so you can copy/paste to save you typing all the matches in !

{Admin edit: I've now copied the list of games into this thread to make it easier. See below.}

Have you ever had so much excitement?? :mexican:

GOOD LUCK

I must be honest and say I have zero expectations for England under Southgate other than to be bored to death with his style of frightened football. Never felt so underwhelmed at the prospect of a major football tournament - maybe it has something to do with the politics of it's venue and the associated corruption of its award. I just hope it all goes off peacefully. My suspicion is that England scrape through to the first knock out stage and go no further and Southgate falls on his sword and fresh blood gives England a transfusion of hope. Eddie Howe anyone?? As for forecasting the scores I will do just Group 'B'
GROUP B
England v Iran 1-0
USA v Wales 0-0
Wales v Iran 1-0
England v USA 1-1
Wales v England 0-0
Iran v USA 0-0

So Maxspeed England top the group by scoring just one more goal than Wales ?

How are we sleep-walking into this corrupt World Cup and playing the hostile regime of Iran ( nothing against the football team and mostly good people of Iran ) ?

I will probably enjoy watching Wales more than England. England have good players but are so frustrating to watch ( a bit like another football team that comes to mind ).

Totally agree. Not interested in watching Southgate try and grind it out with two holding midfielders. Makes me lose the will to live.

Given the dodgy dealings in previous World Cups (1934, 1978, 2002, etc.) I'd suggest hosts Qatar as a quarter finalist at least.........

i'm sorry - if the idea of making predictions for the world cup in Qatar offends people then i will abandon this thread - didnt mean to cause upset !

I dont think its causing upset, I think its more a general lack of enthusiasm for the competition as a whole!

I'm looking forward to WC personally. Hopefully more teams will play to win than not. A very easy group for England on paper. Wales v USA will be big game for second spot unless Iran surprise a few. USA has a pretty good record of getting out of group and I'd expect them to be second favourites.

If anyone fancies watching something a bit more interesting than Southgate's England struggle, I can recommend this docuseries on netflix; the true story of FIFA, the Qatar World Cup and what went before. (Ironic its listed under "crime programmes")
