Amazing how poor our crowds were back then. We had Ocker, Tuohy and Casey up front, it's regarded as something of a golden era in our history... Yet we were only getting 500 for some home games.

Particularly telling that in that Worcestershire Senior Cup final there was a far bigger crowd at Bromsgrove's Victoria Ground for the first leg than the key second leg at Aggborough.

I started supporting Kiddy regularly in 95/96 after the Trophy final v Woking. By then crowds were 1,500 minimum - I remember thinking how bad it was when we had 1,400 v Welling that season.

Makes you realise how fortunate we are that our history worked out as it did, with the Allner era developing and then a five-year spell in the Football League. Now we get 2,000 to 2,500 as a matter of course.

We need to build on our fantastic facilities and
fanbase and get ourselves established in the division higher!

1985-86 was the final season before I started attending regularly. Although crowds appear to be 500-600 for early season league games, they were closer to 1,000 by the end of the season - and by the following season they rarely dropped below 1,000 for league games, helped of course by the publicity of that Welsh Cup run, the visit to Wembley and FA Trophy win in 1987 and the crazy number of goals we used to score (the above shows us netting 13 against Wycombe in just 2 games inside a month!).

The crowds Harriers were getting also need to be put in the wider context of football attendance in the mid-1980s. I don’t know whether 1985-86 was the true low point of attendances nationally, but it was close if it wasn’t. Hooliganism, plus being post-Bradford and Heysel tragedies, did not make football an attractive prospect. I ended up a Harriers fan because of some of the scenes we witnessed at other Midlands grounds in the mid-80s - Aggborough was a much safer environment for a dad and his lad on a Saturday afternoon.

1985-86 was my last season living in South Yorkshire before we moved to the Midlands. My dad would occasionally take me to watch Doncaster. That season they finished mid-table in Division 3 and had an average crowd of 2,800. That is basically (give or take a 100), what Harriers are averaging, three tiers below, this season. Donny’s wasn’t even the worst average in the third tier that season. A third of clubs in Division 4 averaged less than 2,000 (including Wrexham!).

The rise of attendances generally, but also in non-league football, over the last few decades has been notable, particularly in a world where there are so many alternative leisure pursuits, and despite the cost of living pressures of the last few years.

Casey’s stats are wild. How we could do with him or Ocker now.

It was very different at Aggborough in the 80s to the experience now, but I can see why non league is growing in popularity.

People still felt connected to the players in the 80s, even in the top flight. They weren’t paid as much and were often local lads. In the prem or Championship you can forget that now.

Anyway, back to Darlington, I’m quite glad it’s off. Another loss would really have knocked our confidence. No excuses, we have a run of winnable games now at Aggborough. COYR!

Now that’s a CF! Great guy off the field as well.
Graham Allner, our special one’, knew how to play attacking football.

What competition was the MBC? We beat Worcester but there doesn’t appear to be any further appearances.
