Captain Crazy RIP

Sadly we've been told today that the legend that is Captain Crazy (Roger Harris) passed away yesterday just a few days before his 80'th birthday.

The Captain was famous on the tannoy at Aggborough, from the 90's up to the 2010's when he retired, and his wacky comments about the Sainsbury's traffic lights and weird combinations of football results. His friendly treatment of the young mascots who looked at him as if he'd gone out

When he left the Harriers he became the Worcester City announcer and treated them to his wit and repartee until his eventual retirement in 2011.

In recent years he had been suffering with Myeloma and needed the help of carers but still kept his sense of humour.

RIP Captain and tell that hearse to go across the Sainsbury junction in tribute to a great man.

Very sad news. It was only the other day at the Leek game a lad I was stood near impersonated him saying “is there anybody here with Leek Town”

Recall back in 2020 he was very ill with Covid and was reported in the local news that he had overcome that and was able to return home.
Always an odd and mystifying decision by the club letting him go. Was part of the furniture so to speak.
Rest in peace Captain Crazy.

Sad news,
Roger was what might have been termed a 'lovable eccentric' back in the day.
So many memories; I recall him kitted out as Admiral Nelson at a Welsh Cup match one dark Monday night in the 1980s, and when on the supporter's coach used to do a "Hello this is your captain speaking...." spiel as if he was flying us all on a jumbo to warm climes!
Back when I had long hair and a leather jacket in my youthful rocker days I chanced across him collecting glasses in a pub near Bridgnorth one night. He looked at me and said "Are you in the Ramones?" I said no and he replied " you could be you know....". Nutter.

If memory serves didn't they bring him back briefly in about 2007(ish?). Maybe did a game or two. Not long after Dave Niblett left. The same time they ended up trying out half of the DJs on Radio Wyvern.

We did have him back for a while, yes. If I recall correctly he stood in when one nameless announcer departed in haste with the HMRC in hot pursuit?

The funeral for Captain Crazy will take place at the Wyre Forest Crematorium on Wednesday November 13th at 10.30am.

Colourful attire is encouraged.

As you may know Captain Crazy's funeral is next week - At the Wyre Forest Crematorium on Wednesday November 13th at 10.30am.

A request has been made for a Harriers flag to drape over the coffin. It has to be a straight forward flag with no other team badges on it or with other peoples names either. It will also have to be a large flag big enough to cover the coffin.

If you know of one could you let me know asap please.

A couple of years ago, I was in conversation with Dave Kidd, Sports writer with The Sun newspaper, it was at a Charity event in Birmingham. He recalled watching the Harriers play at Aggborough, and as well as being very complimentary about the ground and the pies, he was also very amused at The Captains style of broadcasting over the tannoy system, especially when he played the Casualty theme music every time the trainers ran onto the pitch ! Maybe that theme could be played for the old boy, when the final whistle is blown on his last appearance ?

This has now been sorted and the club (well Helen) have donated a scarf to go on the coffin too.

RIP Captain. Great memories of him over the years, especially when he got his white suit dirty. A shame how it ended for him at Aggborough. Roger was a very eccentric character (obviously) and I'm glad to have known him.

I'll be going and it would be good to see plenty of Harriers fans there. Wonder if anyone will be there from the club? Helen maybe.

Myself and Jasper, off here, went to pay our respects at the Captains funeral this morning.

A nice relaxed service with some faces from the past were there and just the one from the present. Graham Allner, Darren Steadman, Jimmy Conway, Phil Mullins and some others I didn't recognise or if I did I couldn't put a name to.

Nick Griffiths was 'representing' the club.

A fair turnout of Harriers fans too with Richard Mercer, Simon Hazeldine and Les Jones' mate Ken there. I'm sure Jasper could think of some more.

Also there was the well known local DJ Brian Davis and Martin Hone from the Opposite Lock nightclub that used to be in Gas Street Birmingham. Martin was one of the first to employ Roger way back in the sixties and also famous for organising the ill fated Birmingham Grand Prix.

Thanks Phil. The captain was a notable part of my early years as a supporter, which I will always look back on with great fondness.
