Harriers stun Glovers

Against all the odds the Harriers came back with the kind of Christmas present we all thought was unlikely when goals from John Williams and Sean Parrish in each half gave us all three points at rain swept Yeovil.

Another surprise was the fact that Jan Molby decided to drop Matt Gadsby, Sam Shilton and Andy White to the bench and bought back Graham Ward, John Williams and Sean Parrish.  New signing Lee Jenkins replaced the departed Steve Burton, who has now returned to Hull City.  The other new signing, Scott Rickards, was on the bench too.

It was Yeovil who started the strongest and in the first 20 minutes they took the game to the Harriers but only had one real chance to show for their efforts.  That was a header from Kirk Jackson that went just wide.

During that first period of the game the Harriers were lucky not to have had Craig Hinton sent off when he decided to fight Wayne Hatswells corner following a nasty tackle on Hatswell by Kevin Gall.  With both sides joining in both players received yellow cards and the referee moved play forward ten yards in our favour.  It is Christmas, after all!!

Slowly the Reds came more into the game and Adie Smith saw his header from a Danny Williams corner go just wide of the mark.  This was followed up with another header, this time from John Williams, that was going wide of goal.  The on rushing Sean Parrish just failed to connect with it at the far post.

Soon after Matt Gadsby came on for the injured Adie Smith.

With the clock ticking down to half time, and conditions out there getting worse by the second, it was the Harriers who took the lead when John Williams capitalised on some hesitancy in the Glovers defence to run onto Matt Gadsby's fine cross and tap the ball out from six yards out.

HT. 0 - 1

The teams came out for the second period to a slight abatement in the rain but the pitch had now become waterlogged.  The grounds men's efforts seemed to have been wasted as both goal mouths were flooded.  The game should have been called off but Mr Hegley decided to continue.

Yeovil would have been glad that he didn't because in the 58th minute they drew level with a goal from Gall after Paul Terry, brother of Chelsea and England's John, played a long pass to Gall who took it on to slip it past Stuart Brock in the Harriers goal.

With Yeovil now looking the more likely side to win the game started to get bogged down in the mud and chances became rare.  That was until, again against the run of play, the Harriers took the lead after a free kick on the edge of the box.

Wayne Hatswell took the kick and after the ball pinged around the box for a few seconds it was Sean Parrish who finally got the decisive touch to send the ball over the line for his third goal of the season.

That was the signal for the Glovers to rescue the game and, after a couple of substitutions, they started to put more pressure on the Harriers defence but without any joy.  It wasn't until almost the end of the game that they almost managed to score.

A free kick on the edge of the area was taken by Lee Johnson but it was only just stopped from going in by Brockie who tipped it against the bar.  Eventually it was cleared to safety by his team mates.

At the final whistle it was an unexpected three points for us that, due to other results, saw us climb just one place up the table.  With an home game against Bristol Rovers, who lost at home to Northampton, coming up on Sunday we have a good chance to climb higher.
